FWIW, I've found that for archival purposes, I record at a moderate bitrate MPEG2 (2 gig/hour) at 640x480. Avidemux to find commercials, and then do a 2-pass, denoise, resize to 352x480 MPEG2 transcoding. It makes great VHS/broadcast archives at 5-6 hour-long (42 minute) shows per DVD.

How long do you spend for each DVD?

I don't know if you mean my own time to process them, or the computational time required to do this. As far as my time, most of it is scripted except the commerical tagging. Aside from the manual commercial tagging (more of a tedious PITA than anything else), it's not *too* bad now that I've got the system set up. A one-hour (~43 minute) show might take this long:

- Indexing: 2-3 minutes (scripted)
- Manual commercial cutlisting: 3-5 minutes (of MY time).
- Cutting, 2-pass transcoding and remuxing: 4 hours (2.4 GHz machine, scripted)
- Making fancy DVD menus with qdvdauthor 10 minutes for six 1-hour shows. (MY time, but it's optional if you just wanted to hit 'title' on the DVD player to advance to the next show)
- Mastering, imaging, burning image... 1 hour (mostly unattended)

It was a little painful to figure out how to do everything, but now with it set up, it's not too bad. I think I posted the scripts awhile back, but they really don't do much anyway. Basically batch fire up avidemux and load the previously constructed edit lists and filter options. If I didn't post them earlier and anyone wants a copy, I'll fire one off.
