After reading the spec sheets, I think your guess is correct. The 23415/16 has the demuxer in it, and so, I think the audio comes out "normal" signal levels. The MSP3400 doesn't seem to be involved in the baseband audio ... it exists to decode the tuner's signal from the various stereo/mono signals at the IF level.


So, I guess poking more into the 23415/16 is where any level control will occur. In reading the API specs, I can't see settings that affect that level. The decoder on the 350, the SAA7127, only does the video. So, my assumption is 23415/16's compressed data out is the video signal, and the audio is already decoded when it leaves the chip.

Perhaps someone more knowledgable than I can shed more light on this ...

P.S. -- tracing the signal isn't out of the question, but .... well ... does anyone know of an inexpensive line level audio amplifier to add a few dB of gain?
