After playing with it for a few more hours today, I think I have
everything working well. For those that are interested (even though
this is a bit off topic), this is how I got the ALSA:default thing
working in mythtv: I went to here
http://mandrakeusers.org/lofiversion/index.php/t24094.html and copied
the asoundrc file devries posted. It is the second one posted. The
next post starts with " All right, that one worked!" I put a copy of
that file in both the root and mythtv users' home directories and
rebooted. Then went into mythtv and typed "ALSA:default" for the
output device and "default" as the mixer device. Now my sound stays
active even after changing channels.

Sergey, thanks for posting the driver config lines. Once I figured out
they had to be in /etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv instead of
/etc/modules.conf, that is what got me going.
