I just googled (how could I have NOT googled yesterday) on "__init"
and realized that these are defined in "linux/init.h", which was not
included in wm8775.c or in saa7115.c...  I added include lines and
rebuilt...

My "ivtv: i2c client addr: 0x44 not found!" message went away and I
have static!

I've never been so happy to see static :)
