I've played around with some older drivers, but can't get any of them to
work properly for various reasons (varying from not detecting the
hardware properly to page allocation failure on modprobe-ing).

The problem is still there in 0.3.4j .

How likely is it that this could be fixed soon? Is the cause of the
problem obvious to someone, or will more details be needed? I'm
considering whether I should wait for a fix before converting my ~50 VHS
tapes to MPG, or use the system's onboard audio to capture the sound and
add it to the files afterwards (anyone have any tips to simplify getting
A/V sync right?).

Also, a small correction to my original mail:

This problem was most likely due to a problem with the video source I
used at the time. The picture is fine when using my DVD player as
s-video source.
