One question comes to mind:
if renaming/deleting HcwMakoA.ROM solves this crackling, what is this firmware used for. Ie what gets broken by not allowing this to load?

Thanks for the tip, this information allowed me to fix it as well. Tried various combinations (first it left the line-in sound working but tuner sound gone) and eventually found one that worked. I put the changes I made into a simple patch, note that I don't have a clue what I'm really doing and this might break something else. (0.3.4k didn't fix it for me in case it should have; this patch works on that too though).
The same effect can be achieved by just deleting/renaming your audio firmware file, I believe. -- Tyler Trafford
