Typically they depend on the XMLTV grabber you are going to use - if you're in the UK I recommend the Radio Times grabber which provides 14 days of detailed listings. I normally use this for either: i) the channel number (between 21-69 in Europe) when specifying analogue tuner channels, and ii) the cable TV channel number when used with direct S-Video or composite input and a channel changing script. I'd suggest reading the mythtv list if you aren't already as these issues regularly crop up there!
