Typically they depend on the XMLTV grabber you are going to use - if
you're in the UK I recommend the Radio Times grabber which provides 14
days of detailed listings. When you set up mythtv with channels on the
PVR card, these IDs should be populated in the database for you.

I normally use this for either:

i)  the channel number (between 21-69 in Europe) when specifying
analogue tuner channels, and
ii) the cable TV channel number when used with direct S-Video or
composite input and a channel changing script.

I'd suggest reading the mythtv list if you aren't already as these
issues regularly crop up there!
