Let me start by stating that I'm using a VIA KT-133 based motherboard, and having RTFM I'm well aware that this is a potential source of problems. Still I'm hoping someone may be able to shed some light on the problem I'm having (other than "get a new motherboard" which may be my only option...)

I've been running a PVR-250 on this system for some time and it's been rock-solid (running MythTV). I wanted to get more tuners, so I bought a PVR-500 and swapped it for the 250 (the 250 will eventually go into a slave backend).

When using the 250, I ran ivtv 0.2.0-rc3j. Although the website indicates that 150 support has been backported to the 0.2 series, I get nothing but "static" with this version, so I downloaded ivtv-0.3.6f. This works, in the sense that I get good picture/sound. The problem is that at random (and generally rather short) intervals, the system spontaneously reboots. (No error messages, etc). This seems particularly likely to occurr when starting a capture (rather than occurring some minutes into a capture).

I've tried several other ivtv versions. Anything prior to 0.3.6a just gives "static". I've gone as far back as 0.3.4m in the 0.3 series, and I still get reboots (and static). I haven't done a stability test with 0.2.0-rc3j to see if the reboots occurr; that's next on my list.

I've tried the "noapic" kernel option. I've tuned my BIOS in various ways, including underclocking both CPU and RAM and turning off any agressive performance options, etc. Neither of the interrupts used by the PVR-500 are shared with any other device.

The system is an athlon at 1200Mhz with 768M PC133 RAM (currently clocked at 100Mhz instead of 133).

lspci output and ivtv logs for version 0.2.0-rc3j and 0.3.6f are included as attachments; let me know if that's a bad idea on this list.

I'm using HcwMakoA.ROM from the Hauppauge CD, and ivtv-fw-enc.bin extracted from pvr48wdm_1.8.22037.exe. I've also tried HcwFalcn.rom from the CD with similar bad results (perhaps a bit worse, not sure).

I was very pleased with the stability of my PVR-250 on this system; that's why I have some hope that perhaps the PVR-500 can be made to work, despite the shortcomings of the VIA chipset. On the other hand I gather from what I've read that the 150/500 has a quite different DMA interface than the 250, so perhaps it will never play nice.

Any ideas? Thanks,

        Dan Brown
