I don't claim to fully understand it either, that's just how it seems to
be working. It appears the cx25840 attenuates the audio by some amount,
with the default setting of 36 (18 db) being the least amount of
attenuation. My first attempted setting was 100, which would be about
50 dB of attenuation, or 32 dB more than the default, and that was close
to inaudible. My second attempted setting of 60 provided a volume
approximately equivalent by ear to a PVR-250, which syncs up fairly well
with my earlier observation that versions of the driver post 0.3.4m are
overgained by about 10 dB relative to a PVR-250.
Frankly, I can't see much use for the cx25840 volume adjustment except
for this one, very particular application: Adjusting the relative
volume levels between cards in a system with multiple card types.
That's why I thought the module option was an acceptable implementation
- you just set the cx25840 volume level one time at startup so the cards
are equally loud and then use the standard ioctl as the 'master' volume
adjustment during normal opertion.

One thing, though, I don't fully understand how a value of 36 (18dB if
I understand things correctly) represents full volume as you describe
above.
