This is the fairly well-known console framebuffer issue - (I think) the ivtv-fb driver conflicts with the regular console framebuffer, resulting in the hang. You may find the following post useful http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/99665 but which options you use (if using fedora I'd remove rhgb from the kernel options as a start) depend on the distro you are running. I compiled out the console framebuffer support which got my system runnning again, but it should be possible to get the ivtv-fb module loading with the appropriate kernel options.
