This is the fairly well-known console framebuffer issue - (I think)
the ivtv-fb driver conflicts with the regular console framebuffer,
resulting in the hang. You may find the following post useful

but which options you use (if using fedora I'd remove rhgb from the
kernel options as a start) depend on the distro you are running. I
compiled out the console framebuffer support which got my system
runnning again, but it should be possible to get the ivtv-fb module
loading with the appropriate kernel options.
