I made a little progress with my Diamond PVR-550.

I now have video and can tune stations, but no audio. :(

It turns out I was trying to set cardtype=1 on the ivtv module
instead of the cx25840 module (thanks Brian!).

I have tried several flavors of the ivtv 0.3.6 driver, but
I can't get audio going with any of them.

Here's what I'm currently using to initialize:

alias char-major-61 lirc_i2c
alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 ivtv
options cx25840 cardtype=1
options ivtv ivtv_std=1 tuner=44 ivtv_debug=1
options msp3400 once=1 simple=1
