When does it freeze? I wonder if there's a kernel oops which is missed because people are in X. If possible, could you try reverting the options which helped, then from tty1 (assuming that's where the kernel messages go) run "DISPLAY=:0.0 mplayer /dev/video0" or your usual player command.
