Enabling SysRq support doesn't by itself do anything, but allows certain inspection and/or recovery if the system locks up "hard". See Documentation/sysrq.txt in the kernel tree for the details. If, however, there's nothing printed on the console at lockup, I'd start to suspect hardware errors.
