Also, I forgot to mention, and it might be usefull, I got lazy the 
first time I did all the tests above and didn't unplug the computer
like all the previous tests.  As I got to the latest svn version I
has sound.  So I started all over again and made sure to unplug the
box each time.  It becaue clear very quickly that this is the preferred
method of testing as it allowed me to find the version without sound
more easily.
