I use Jarod's method listed on http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/
fcmyth.php#lirc (the Update in the Lirc section). It's a modprobe
for anything listed as char-major 81 or 61 added to rc.sysinit to
load ivtv and/or lirc very early on in the boot process.
