I'm unable to get my Hauppauge PVR-500 working on my gentoo box. Can
someone offer suggestions? I'm not sure if it is a setup issue, a
driver issue, or a hardware issue.

With ivtv-0.3.9, /dev/video1 works fine (picture, sound) but /dev/video0
just gives static. Same with ivtv-0.3.8.
With the latest 0.2 and with 0.3.2s, both tuners give 'pulsing static',
though they pulse at different rates. I tried the black_magic fix for
these versions but it didn't help.
I'm on NTSC and I hook up coax to the tv board. I'm in Canada. I've
tried everything I can find via google searches.

I've been testing the devices using:
ptune.pl --input /dev/video0 -c 2
cat /dev/video0 > vid0.mpg
(and the same for video1)

I've tried using ivtvctl to change the tuner to 7 or 6 (6 is tuner0
which seems appropriate). This did not help.

/etc/modules.d/ivtv is as follows:
alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 ivtv
alias char-major-81-1 ivtv
options ivtv ivtv_debug=1 ivtv_std=1 tuner=57,57

I'm using the firmware from
http://hauppauge.lightpath.net/software/mce/mce_cd_v27a.zip, I was
unable to find any OLDER firmware for the PVR-500.

Here are the appropriate section from dmesg:
