I was able to get the data to Hans for review by updating the debug in the source to "1" and currently waiting on his feedback.

Under debian (and thus I assume ubuntu), update-modules needs to be
run first, which generates modules.conf and runs depmod -a.
Debian now uses /etc/modprobe.d/filename for module options with 2.6
kernels, don't know about ubuntu.
