Hi,

I've a problem with the config of a PVR500MCE card in Mandriva 2006. I think actually that I made the problem worse than it was...(Ouch...) When installing Mandriva 2006 the card-chipset was recognized properly. It said it had the cx23416 chip found and was loading the IVTV-driver by itself. Actually when using the card didn't work because the firmware didn't exist. I installed the firmware to its directory and tried again. Still no function. Then I followed the installationsteps provided by IVTV and recompiled the IVTV-driver from source. Then I got confused about the modules. In Mandriva they are GZipped and not the .ko extension. Well, to be sure I did both. I GZipped the new .ko drivers and copied them in the original driver dir from the kernel and I also maintained the install wich was provided by the driver. Then the log file presented these messages:
Linux video capture interface: v1.00
Nov 21 01:25:39 localhost kernel: ivtv: ==================== START INIT IVTV ====================
Nov 21 01:25:39 localhost kernel: ivtv: version 0.2.0 (rc3f) loading

The drivers in the mandriva kernel is *very* old. I've packages up a dkms rpm package with more recent ivtv drivers (that work on my pvr-500). You're better off using those, just look in a Mandriva contrib repository somewhere on a mirror.

http://anorien.csc.warwick.ac.uk/mirrors/Mandriva/devel/2006.0/i586/media/contrib/dkms-ivtv-unstable-0.3.7k-1mdk.i586.rpm

or the more recent:

Regaring getting those old drivers removed, I've filled a bugreport about this, but the Mandriva kernel maintainer:
- doesn't want to remove the driver from the Mandriva kernel package;
- doesn't update the driver in the Mandriva kernel package;
- doesn't keep the driver in sync with the userland tools (they are seperate packages).

See: http://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=13149

It's quite sad to see that the development process regarding the kernel is in this state at Mandriva. The result is what we see here: IMHO poort quality and confusion. Lets hope that things will improve.

with kind regards,
