The tuner and tveeprom in ivtv are more complete than the ones in the kernel, but the kernel version should have support for almost all the PVR500's out there. A few rare or new models will require the ivtv version. Eventually, ivtv will no longer have its own version as its being merged with the v4l version that is included with the kernel. Then, for people who get a new model not supported in the kernel, they'll have to use the cvs/svn version from v4l.
