I'm pretty sure this is not the case for more recent bt878 and cx88 based cards. I know that most bt878 cards have the btaudio driver for capture from the card's own line-in or (in the case of a board with a tuner, the tuner's audio output). I do recall seeing that while the cx88 hardware supports audio, there may not be driver support for it yet.
A bt878-based card is probably the best one for this application as I believe the cx88 drivers are still considered highly experimental while bttv is INCREDIBLY mature, I think most of the Hauppauge WinTV (non-PVR version) boards are still based on the 878 and not the newer cx88 chip.
