Okay, I finally found the time to check into this. And I was unable to reproduce the problems I had had earlier. I was able to change channels and had audio both with the atrpms packaged encoder firmware (revision 0x02040024) and the encoder firmware I installed by hand using the ivtv instructions (revision 0x02050032).
