Well sir, I'm stumped. It *appears* as though firmware_helper, which
is invoked by a udev rule (/etc/udev/rules.d/05-udev-early.rules),
doesn't see the firmware binary (that the kernel can plainly see), and
I have no idea why. The link below discusses a solution for a similar
problem with a wireless NIC driver; you might try it just to see if it
helps. If it doesn't, you can always just delete the file containing
the new udev rule you created.
