Thanks John, I saw some of the tinny audio posts, but didn't think they applied to me.  Perhaps I'll try some of the solutions and see if it makes any difference.  It looks like this might have some effect:

ivtvctl -d /dev/video0 -q 1

Don,

Search for "tinny audio" on this list, and you'll get more information 
than you probably want.

Post back if you need further input after that... this is by no means a 
"closed issue" with ivtv, but you may find some relief.
