I've been over the instructions with a fine tooth comb, so I am as sure
as I can possibly be that I am compiling with the correct kernel. If
there is a more explicit test to determine what kernel I am compiling
with, please let me know.
As for dmesg, it gives me this output:
[17179753.196000] Unknown OutputIN= OUT=vmnet1 SRC="" href="http://192.168.140.1">192.168.140.1
DST= 192.168.140.255 LEN=96 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=64 ID=0 DF PROTO=UDP
SPT=137 DPT=137 LEN=76
[17179753.196000] Unknown OutputIN= OUT=vmnet1 SRC="" href="http://192.168.140.1">192.168.140.1

SPT=137 DPT=137 LEN=76
[17179753.196000] Unknown...
.... which goes on and on for far too long to reproduce here. It is far
too cryptic for me to make any sense of.

Those messages are not anything to do with the module you are having trouble with, please do dmesg -c to clear the buffer, then modprobe the module, finally dmesg again and reply to the list with the output.
