Whoah I just noticed something else, it appears when I "zap" a lot (rapidly changing channels, like with a regular television) the problem manifests itself. Apparently when running ivtv-tune something changes. Maybe some buffer/register doesn't get flushed, that does get flushed when stopping and restarting the stream?
