I downloaded and installed ivtv 0.6.1 and the 2.6.16-1.2133 kernel [1] and 
everything seems to be working much better for me.  Thanks for the tips.

I found an issue [2] that seemed kind-of related, but I'm not sure if it's the 
same problem or not.

For others reference, I had to install the kernels from [1], download and 
install ivtv 0.6.1 like normal, and lirc 0.8.0 to get my serial IR receiver 
working.

Also, I was using the separate -dec and -enc firmware from atrpms, but I had 
to use the combined ivtv-firmware package [3].  For some reason I didn't get 
any audio when using the split packages - audio only works with the other 
firmware package.
