Play them in mplayer or xine from the command line.  Once the file 
starts playing you should see some information about how it is encoded 
in your terminal.

Then use ivtvctl to change how your new recordings are encoded so that 
they more closely match content that is known working.

I had to do this to get things to play nice with my Pioneer "elite" DVD 
player.  (that's not so elite)
