The firmware location is good.

Cant say for sure but i looks ok from the ivtv init. See below about the 
ivtv version.

mplayer for testing and my box runs mythtv. For me I add the frequencies 
in mythtv by hand with mythweb. Open the device directly: mplayer 
/dev/video0

The pvr-x50 are not DVB devices.

Don't follow this as it is not for the pvr cards.

OK here is a problem. ivtv 0.7.x is only for 2.6.17 kernels and can not 
be used with 2.6.16. Use ivtv 0.6.x instead.

I suspect many of the issues will be solved when using ivtv 0.6.x. If 
not post the exact error and the ivtv init message
