Nope, Tarek, you were spot on.
A trip to the video store, the purchase of two new cables and the
problem is solved - apparently the old cables (saved in a drawer in
the basement for three years) gave out sometime during all the 'on-
off' as they worked the first round.
Anyway...I did go with the udev config and it 'just' works.

What I am saying is your line can handle 1 or 2 inputs but 3 inputs is
too much maybe? (the 500 is like a 2 way splitter because it has 2
tuners)
