Hi Robert,
   Thanks for the response. I tried that several times
and the results were the same.

Hi Igor,
   I don't recall off the top of my head (I'm at work
at the moment) which version of udev I ended up
installing. I think it was the very latest that gentoo
had to offer.

   However, that version that started behaving a bit
flakey on reboot, reporting errors about devices and
such. In fact, upgrading that version of udev created
a situation where the machine has to be powered off
when I shut it down (it goes into a loop on this udev
error). So, perhaps I should try a different
distribution (as Daniel did)? I will say, however,
that even in prior versions of udev the firmware load
problem continued.

   Anyway, I should be back on that project in a
couple of weeks...And I was sort of hoping that
whatever was failing on udev would be sorted out and
that, with more time, the ivtv issues would shake out
as well.

Thanks again for everyone's help, though I fear that I
may be back.
