I have some additional information add on this request.

When the sound "disappears" in Mythtv it first gets squeeky and
distorted, like a fast forwarded clipped chirp, and then the sound goes
out.

The eror message below actually occurs when either beginning or ending a
recording after this occurs.  There is no event in the log.

The condition is fixed by unloading [rmmod ivtv] and reloading [modprobe
ivtv]

This condition occurs in mplayer [mplayer /dev/video0] as well.   In
that case, there is not a chirping to the sound as it goes out, it
happens more abruptly.   Mplayer begins to complain of 

        Too many packets in the buffer
        Maybe you are playing a non-interleaved stream/file or the codec
failed?

By the way, this happens with two different computers, but I have not
been able to try a different Hauppauge card.
