What are you using to record? If it is MythTV, then there is a option
somewhere in the setup to turn it off (actually, AFAIK it is off by
default in MythTV).
You can check which streams are being used by running v4l2-ctl
--log-status during capturing: any stream with a non-zero status is being
used, the VBI stream should have status 0.
