So you need /dev/video24 for sound to be used in helix producer or does
it also take an mpeg file/stream with audio and video? I would think it
should but I don't know helix producer.

If you can feed helix producer an mpeg file/stream you might be able to
fool it by using the alsa dummy device. It basically simulates all the
mixer controls and devices. I am not sure if it also creates the
corresponding oss devices but I guess it should.
