The latest IVTV X driver supports this pretty well. I've been using it for a few weeks and haven't noticed much (if any) quality difference. As a bonus it will let you use the time-stretch feature of MythTV which allows you to watch recordings at a higher speed without everyone sounding like chipmunks. You can't do this using just the decoder output.
