Thanks Scott! Turns out I found some helpful info on this page:

This card uses a video source with a set-top box, so I added the
following to my channel change script:

v4l2-ctl --set-ctrl temporal_filter=0

That didn't fix the problem by itself, so I also changed the capture
resolution to 720x480. Now my recordings using the PVR-150 look just
as nice as the PVR-350.

I still consider my move to KnoppMyth a great success, since I am
using mostly default settings. In the big picture this has saved me a
lot of configuration.
