Hi,
I'm having problems with getting a decent picture out of my Hauppauge
PVR-500. There's a lot of snow/noise on the picture and only a few
channels are 'recogniseable'.
My configuration is as follows:
-Abit NF-M2SV motherboard
-2 GB RAM
-AMD A64 X2 AM2 2100 processor
-Suse 10.3, kernel upgraded to 2.6.22.13-0.3-default (using regular
Yast package manager)
-Hauppauge PVR-500 with Samsung tuners
Here's a few observations:
-The card installed without problems ('out-of-the-box')
-If I do: ivtv-tune -teurope-west -c22 /dev/video0
I get: /dev/video0: 479.250 MHz
-And if I do: ivtv-tune -teurope-west -c22 /dev/video1
I also get: /dev/video0: 479.250 MHz
i.e. it's as if I only have one tuner, although 2 tuners seem to be
recognised by ivtv (see below).
-When I installed MythTV, I can only select: tuner1, not tuner0 as is
indicated in most how-to's / installation instructions for MythTV.
-The picture quality issues appear both in MythTV and in mplayer
/dev/video0, cat /dev/video1 > test.mpg etc.
-I've seen many entries on various webfora on this card and esp. on
difficulties with the Samsung tuners (so much for doing your research
before you buy...), but haven't found any tips there that have
improved my situation:
-I've switched off case and cpu fans to exclude those as a cause of
interference with the tuner.
-I've switched on/off my cable signal amplifier. (If I switch it off,
the situation deteriorates)
-I've tried the box on 2 different cable sockets in my house, all of
which give a good picture on a regular TV set.
-Initially I ran with the ivtv version that came with Suse 10.3
(0.10.xxx), later I removed the 'ivtv*' packages using Yast and
compiled version 1.0.3 from source (as this was the recommended
version for my kernel on the wiki). This made no difference to the
performance of the card. I've also upgraded the firmware from the
version that came with Suse 10.3 to the latest.
-I've switched inputs to the Composite input and sampled a bit of
footage from my camcorder, which resulted in an excellent picture. I
believe this proves that it's really the tuner and not the MPEG2
encoder or anything.
As you can see, I've tried many things and have run out of options. I
was hoping there's someone out there with a good idea for further
diagnostics or even (who knows) a solution.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Wessel
