IIRC I had those problems too, and using xine instead of mplayer "fixed" it. 

I moved away from mplayer for the video playing, and then I moved away from
mencoder for the reencoding of movies (transcode does a better job with 
deinterlacing it seems,
and right now I'm testing ffmpeg2theora), so over all I'm a bit disappointed 
with mplayer :)
