Success at last! Well it was an easy fix after all. I had upgraded my kernel, since the original install, and the wrong modules/version were being loaded. :( I feel silly for not seeing that sooner.
Sometimes for some reason though, after reboot, I have to rmmod the modules with "make unload", and modprobe the cx18. Then all is well. I now have the card working well with mythtv. Thanks to everyone that has helped me with this.
