With an 82845 and 82801G, I wouldn't expect you to have the problem with
the CX23418 responding poorly to the driver: the motherboard chipset
should be cleaning up the mess.

The Master Abort you see here on the secondary side of the bridge is
likely because the CX23418 failed to respond to at least 1 PCI bus
access.  Since the bridge is set for subtractive decode, I think the PCI
chipset does a retry, so the CX23418 responds properly the second time
around and the CX23418 "works" for you. (I have to check the PCI spec
about retries to be sure).
