I think what Sander is saying is that yes X may be trying to use the
on-board video card because that it what it finds first that supports
acceleration.  It's plausible.  I'd wonder how to coax X into logging
more information about what it's doing.

IIRC the dump in your original e-mail showed some sort of stall in the
via driver's routine to wait for a vertical blank or sync.  That seems a
reasonable thing to do when you want to sync up to a video controller's
output frame.  What else but X would be setting up the VIA onboard
graphics to do that?
