I have the Hauppauge HVR-1600. I, at one time, did actually get it going
by following threads at www.ubuntuforums.org. Since then I have tried
over and over again to set it up again but have been unsuccessful.

I would like to try to figure this out in a more methodical way so that
if I succeed I will actually know /why/ I succeeded.

So, for my first question to this mailing list I would like to ask just
what are the steps that I must take to get the HVR 1600 going? Is this
just a matter of installing the proper driver and getting the proper
firmware files and installing them properly? I think I have done those
two things properly and still have no success. So there must be more to it.

It doesn't help that when people try to explain this they seem to
explain in a way that /assumes that we already have a certain level of
knowledge.

/I get really confused with all the terminology such as cx18, ivtv, v4l,
etc.
And the commands... dmesg, lspci, ls -l /dev/dvb/adapter0, modprobe
cx18, etc.
AAARGHHHHH!!!!

So please bare with me.
My question is this... On a fresh Ubuntu installation with my Hauppauge
HVR 1600 inserted into the motherboard, what are the basic steps that
are required to make my HVR 1600 work?
