Please provide the dmesg output between 

cx18: Start initialization
and
cx18: End initialization

and maybe the few messages after that for both the case when the driver
fails and when the driver succeeds.

This implies you may need the latest fixes to improve PCI bus
communication with the CX23418 chip.  You need to try cx18 driver
version 1.0.1 or later, which was put in the latest repo 5 days ago:
