Our development documentation is still very poor. I guess you have found the page on the web site, which only explains how to setup the development environment and create a release. For the archictecture / design, we haven't done much in this area until now. During the refactoring I did for 2.x I explained each step on the mailing list, and kept track of it on this issue: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/IVY-434 That's pretty much all we have, sorry about that.
