I suspect the question should have gone to the Xalan list rather than the Xerces list, and was "does our implementation of xsl:number and related functions handle traditional Hebrew numbering" (which reuses the alphabet as numeric characters, with a not-a-word mark, and an additive notation similar to Roman numerals; a websearch will turn up more detailed descriptions of this system).
