about xpath algorithm

Hello! I am a student of a university in China.Can you give me some
information about the xpath algorithm in the JavaAPI1.6? Or you can give me
some webpages address or document titles about the algorithm of xpath. I
want to konw the principle of the xpath algorithm in the JavaAPI1.6 because
I have to compare the xpath to my subtree algorithm.Thanks!
