i didn't say it again on the list, but yes, it's already on debian:

it won't be included in lenny, neither the next ubuntu release, but it will be 
in the next one.

i would like you to have a deep look on the package and send me patches :) 
maybe we could co-maintain it you want.

next step is update all the transport packages:

jabber-aim
jabber-irc
jabber-jit
jabber-msn
jabber-yahoo

which i have no clue about their upstream status but begining with:

jabber-muc

i still have to figure out how the deal with those packages common to jabber14 
as well (which isn't maintained in debian)
