We discussed the issue off-list and I suggested the following formatter
\format[RTFChars,AuthorLastFirstAbbreviator,NoSpaceBetweenAbbreviations,AuthorAndsReplacer,Replace(\,,),Replace(\.,),Replace(;,\,)]{\author}
(\year) \title. \journal \volume: \pages
It's ugly, but it works.
