So, is there a way to generate a BibTexKey of a form (say [author][year][doi])
if the entry has a DOI, and use another form (say
[author][year][journal][firstpage]) if the entry doesn't have a DOI?

other fields.

Well, some publishers use (repeat) the DOI as the bibtexkey when you export the
refrence data of the paper. In Preferences you shoud find the section bibtex
generator (or a similar name) where the bibtexkey is defined as [author][year].
You can use then the DOI but as you say, maybe is not the best choice even if
not all your references get a DOI field, if you want to change the
[author][year] sistem, you can find another more general way to get the
bibtexkeys automatically.
