Well, before all, you need to know which bibliographic style are using you.

In the other hand, the field definition used in JabRef for the
references type are based on bibitex or also in biblatex. If you're
not using one of them then maybe the requeriments for the fields of
that reference type could be different. Anyway, you can edit or create
your own reference types easily in Options>Customize entry types.
