Update: JabRef-2.9.2 loads on the 64-bit desktop but does not display the keyword groups. It lacks the button to re-generate the groups that is found on 3.8.2. Upgrading from 2.9.2 to 3.8.2 worked once. When I made a group change, saved the file, and tried re-start 3.8.2 it again failed. Both 2.9.2 and 3.8.2 are running with Oracle's jdk8u-221. What's different between 2.9.2 and 3.8.2 that allows the former to load without error but also to not display groups? Oliver tells me that JabRef-4.x and -5.x have linux issues and that 3.8.2 will do all I need, but I need to have it consistently load and run. Please advise me what tests I can run to isolate the cause of this major (for me) issue.
